Double Glazing Explained
Double Glazing Explained
Do my window and door frames have to be replaced?
When it comes to retrofit double glazing, your existing timber or aluminium window and door frames will normally not need to be replaced. They will just require some small changes to allow double glazing to be retrofitted into them. The outcome is such that customers often have to look hard to see what has changed. This is because the process makes use of the design of the existing window frames.
In some cases, the window joinery may require repair or replacement due to it’s state. For example, in the case of timber frames, the presence of significant rotting that has broken down the frame (and is uneconomic to repair).
During the process it may be appropriate to replace old window hardware such as window latches and stays. This can be done easily during the project and saves on having to pay someone else to do it at another time.
In keeping the existing frames a significant saving is made when compared with full replacement (this can be anything from 30% and in some cases over 50%). It also means the work is much less intrusive. Since the frames aren’t being removed, there isn’t a risk of introducing leaky building issues and there won’t be addition finishing required for internal walls and external cladding.
